Virgos Love a List!

Bare Cards

Who doesn’t love to be organised? It makes life so much easier and it makes me feel that I'm always ready for anything that life throws at me. Being born in September, my organisational skills are obviously in built because I love a list!

Read on to find out some of my top tips on creating lists and examples of the lists that I use in my everyday life. Or simply skip to the end (if you don't want to read my waffle) for some handy list templates to get you motivated!

Disclaimer: my lists are not vetted. Neither do I profess to have included everything you might need! They're just to share what works for me, in case they might work for you too!

I use the Notes App on my iPhone to make and store my lists because of the handy bullet points that you can tick off once you’ve completed things; it’s easy to make, easy to amend and, because I have my phone with me all the time, it’s always to hand.

Shopping List

My most used list is probably my weekly shopping list. I’ve set up a template with the seven days of the week at the top. This is where I can plan my daily evening meals and then underneath is a handy grocery list which is split into categories, such as fruit, veg, fridge, meat, etc. I leave the food I buy weekly on the list permanently and add other items as we need them. I love the fact it’s always there so I can write things into it as soon as I notice we are short! See my template at the end of my blog.

Christmas Lists

My oldest and favorite list is probably my Christmas present list. Being an overly organised person, I usually start my Christmas shopping in October. I consult my previous year’s list, look at what I bought last year and delete and amend for this year. It’s especially good for Christmas stockings. This main Christmas list also includes all the food items that I might need for the festive period. As it's so long, I've split it into two templates for you to use. Alongside this, I have a Christmas card list which sadly is reducing each year as people pass on. And a Christmas Dinner timings list so that I can provide the best possible dinner for everyone!

Business List:

My longest list is the business list mainly because I don’t want to delete anything once I’ve completed it because it gives me a sense of accomplishment looking back at everything that I have achieved since we started our business two years ago. So, as you can imagine, it’s quite a lengthy list. I haven't included a template for this as it's just a simple list of bullet points of all the jobs I have to do!

Holiday Lists:

And then there’s my holiday lists! I have a list for holidays abroad, lodge holidays in this country and a weekend away holiday list. I share these with the kids so they can make sure that they pack everything they need too. These lists came about because we once went to the lake District and I forgot to pack any trousers or socks for Derren, so we had to go shopping for them whilst away! Hence the need for a list (he also always checks the suitcase now just in case).

Off to University List:

Another favourite list that I’ve shared with friends and family is the ‘Off to Uni list’ which I created to help me cope when my first born daughter Lauren flew the nest for Bath Spa University to study Forensic Psychology. I shared this with a friend when her daughter was off to study and she found the amount of detail especially funny - down to the point that Lauren was taking half a cucumber with her. However, she also found it most helpful! Template below.

My final list of lists that I have is:

The Household To Do List which never gets anything ticked off because it’s just big things like change the carpet and change the curtains and sand the window sills. All things I don’t want to do so those bullet points have been on there for about two years now!
The Evening Meal Options List which breaks down food options into the different proteins so that I can ensure that we eat a varied diet as a family. This list has headings of chicken, lamb, beef, pork vegetarian fish, and I highlight all of the meals that I know everyone in the family likes
The TV Watch List contains dramas, documentaries and films that have been recommended to me to watch on television. This list has become more important as my menopause brain has set in and I kept forgetting all of the good television programs and boxsets that people had raved about! So, I’ve now got a list of those and I can tick them off once we’ve watched them. I also make sure I put what channel they’re on so we don’t have to google (template not included)
The Medical List is more of a diary than a list, but it’s just my list of all the doctors appointments and hospital appointments I've attended so that I can keep a track of my menopause journey and make sure I can remember what everybody has told me and what I need to be doing! (template not included)

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my obsession with lists and maybe been inspired by one of my creations below, which of course you’re welcome to copy and make your own. [For Context: Der is my husband, Dan is my son, Lauren is my daughter who now lives with her girlfriend, Dayla, in Bath with their dog, Winston]

Here’s to making everyone’s life much more organised.
