Non-Binary Birthday Cards: A Guide for Allies

Bare Cards

Buying a birthday card for someone who is non-binary can feel unfamiliar if you're new to it — but it doesn't have to be complicated. This guide is here to help allies, friends, and family members find the perfect non-binary birthday card and write something truly meaningful inside.

At Bare Cards, we've created a range of non-binary birthday cards that are joyful, affirming, and designed for real people — not as an afterthought, but as the whole point.

The image shows a selection of the Bare Cards Non-Binary Birthday card range with gender neutral language such as Grandchild, child, nibling, sibling, and person and depicting gender neutral images such as moonbears and rainbows.

What Does Non-Binary Mean?

Non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that don't fit neatly into the categories of "man" or "woman". Non-binary people may identify as both, neither, somewhere in between, or entirely outside the gender binary. Many non-binary people use they/them pronouns, though some use other pronouns or a combination.

If you're buying a card for a non-binary person in your life, the most important thing is to use their correct name and pronouns — and to choose a card that doesn't assume a gender they don't identify with.

Why Generic Cards Often Fall Short

Walk into most card shops and you'll find birthday cards divided into "for him" and "for her" — with very little in between. For non-binary people, this can feel alienating, especially on a day that's supposed to be about celebrating them.

A non-binary birthday card that uses gender-neutral language, or that explicitly celebrates non-binary identity, sends a clear message: I see you, I respect you, and I'm celebrating you exactly as you are.

What to Look for in a Non-Binary Birthday Card

  • Gender-neutral language — Avoid cards that say "Happy Birthday to a wonderful woman/man". Look for cards addressed to "you" or that use they/them language. Use the correct gender-neutral nouns for relations: child, grandchild, sibling or nibling (the gender-neutral for niece/nephew). Further information can be found on the LGBTQ Nation website.
  • Inclusive design — Non-binary flag colours (yellow, white, purple, and black) or rainbow designs can feel especially affirming.
  • A celebratory tone — The best cards celebrate the person, not just their gender identity. Look for warmth, humour, and joy.
  • Age-appropriate options — Whether you're buying for a non-binary child, teenager, or adult, there are cards designed with different relationships in mind.

What to Write Inside a Non-Binary Birthday Card

Stuck on what to write? Here are some ideas:

  • "Happy Birthday! I hope today is as wonderful and unique as you are."
  • "Wishing you the most joyful birthday — you deserve every bit of it. Love you always."
  • "Happy Birthday to the most brilliant [chosen name]. So proud of who you are."
  • "Celebrating you today and every day. Happy Birthday!"

The key is to keep it personal, use their correct name and pronouns, and let them know they're loved.

Allyship Goes Beyond the Card

Choosing an affirming card is a wonderful act of allyship — but it's just one part of showing up for the non-binary people in your life. Using correct pronouns consistently, correcting others when they misgender your loved one, and educating yourself about non-binary experiences all make a real difference.
